To clear up the 2010 2011,and 2012 trophy presentations, I have these trophies that need to get to their owners. Please email me at mjhanson02@hotmail to claim your trophy or arrange for pickup. I do travel to many races so I can bring them to you if you like. If you would like I can also mail them, but you will have to pay the $10.00 in shipping.

2013 WiSport Racing Calendar

New for 2013 is the changing of the WISport World Championships formats. The Time Trial will now rotate throughout all of WISport's Time Trials with a new course each year. For 2013 the WISport World Championships will be the Get The Lead Out Time Trial in Greenwood.

The World Championships road race is also moving to the second week in August. The course is the same in Fountain City but it will be earlier.

Age group and team points will still be awarded to participants of these events. The only real change is that the first placed Male and Female WISport rider will be recognized as the WISport World Champion and be awarded the WISport Rainbow Jersey.

It’s official: it’s off season. Snow on October 25?! If you are a don’t-ride-in-freezing-cold-and-wet rider like me, you may have already condescended to use your trainer. It’s great to keep those legs in cycling shape—but spinning is junk miles, if there is no purpose behind it. So what to do? Some suggestions…

Spin Class: You have a couple-few options—join a gym, which can be pricey, or find a local spin class. If you do the latter, many bike shops will have either structured or “drop in” classes. The structured classes can be costly—$100+ for 6-8 week classes that meet twice a week—and sometimes they “require” you have a power meter. Drop in classes are typically $5-10 per class—and are typically more social than structured.

Spinervals®: This is Troy Jacobson’s series. There are plenty to be had—literally scores. They are structured workouts; some are basically videotapes of spin classes, others take you “on the road.” They are a tad pricey, but I have seen them often in Half Price Books, so they are easy to get your hands on without spending too much money. They work more with heart rate and gear ratios than power.

Spinning®: I did one of these…a long time ago. As I recall, they are pretty basic, and, purchased new, they are pretty cheap—about $15 per video. They are also a mix of studio and on-road videos, focused on the use of a heart rate monitor. Though the sales literature is geared toward Spinner®Bike owners, you can obviously do the workouts on your trainer.

Global Ride™ Productions: These are all about the outdoor experience. You have series from France, Italy, Spain, Hawaii—tour de world from your basement! Some workouts have stretching and other little tweaks, including a lot of first-person perspective. I am not so sure how structured they are, though.

epicRIDES: This series seems to be a high-tech version of Global Ride. You can use companion music mixes, get rides on iTunes and similar devices, and download their PowerProfiles onto a Garmin Edge or Forerunner, so you can have a more structured workout.

The Sufferfest: These are .mp4s that you have to download onto your computer, then burn onto a DVD. You watch actual famous races like Paris-Nice; time intervals, perceived exertion and cadence appear on the screen to “tell” you what to do...all with some…“inspiring” music. I will say their “Suffer Scale” is rather amusing.

Cyclo-Core: These are my favorite, hands down. Graeme Street has a number of series with specific goals. He even has a nutrition plan. The high-intensity training ensures no junk miles, yet you get a lot done in a short amount of time, and everything is super structured. You can work out based on heart rate or power. His stuff is almost impossible to find used, but it is well worth the cost, and he always seems to have a sale.

I cross country ski all winter, but I know the value of keeping my “bike legs;” no spinning at all, and one pays the price come spring. Basic, unstructured spinning is less problematic, but a person won’t gain any strength—and may actually lose power. So, though the trainer may not be your best friend, I highly recommend making its acquaintance in the company of a video or two.

Registration

Members, WISport is assigning each racer a unique ID number to assist in the enhanced tracking of your scoring information. This seven letter and number ID will need to be provided to each event's race coordinator during the race registration process. There will be a place for you to write the ID number on all race registration materials.

It will be your responsibility to provide this ID # for each WISport race. No WISport ID# = No Points, so please keep your ID# handy. It will also be your responsibility to make sure that your ID # is loaded on the race results correctly. If your ID # is incorrect you will not get your points. Here are some helpful hints to better remember your ID.

Your ID = WI (first two characters) + (First Character of your last name) + Four Digit string (Some # between 0001 and 9999). The WISport ID you get assigned will be yours for life, so feel free to engrave it next to your Viva La Tour or Ironman Tattoo. Your must be currently registered with WISport in order to be assigned a WISport ID. Your Personal WISport ID will be send to you shortly in a folllowing email

The 2011 version of Dar's (Darwin Vollrath's) Midwest TT Championships is coming up fast on May 7. As in years past, we'll be putting riders out at the quick interval of every 15 seconds. Deb (Vollrath) Karlen and husband Mike will be putting on the feed again, along with lots of other goodies, all at no extra charge. In addition, commemorative t-shirts to the first 75 registered racers. Be sure to put your shirt size on your entry form when you pre-reg REAL SOON. Other perks! Long sleeve fastest male and female shirts....who will unseat last year's winners, Brett Whyte and Joan Carlson? There will also be a middle-of-the-pack shirt (RJ Ochman, last year's recipient). All riders who participate in Dar's TT, the July Greenwood RR AND the LBR GTLO TT qualify for the $150 raffle (you must be present to win). There will also be a $50 award to the most improved average speed from Dar's TT compared to the GTLO TT on July 10. DON"T FORGET! One dollar of every entry form goes to BOTH the Children's Miracle Network AND Darwin's local scholarship fund. Who can pass that up!!?!? Come on out and test your early season legs....the weather HAS to be better than the Century Ride (besides, it's only 16 miles..)!
