Menzel race are marked in Red, Yellowand Green. The Rib Falls time trial will be a Team Time Trial for the Menzel Series in 2012. All 11 races will make up the Yellow Jersey series for 2012.

WIsport Gravel Pit Call

Greetings Gravel Pit Volunteers

Winter has arrived, but not much snow. A little rock skiing and bushwacking, but that’s about it. Then it rained last week. The registration limit of 9200 was reached in November. There has been one staff meeting in Hayward, and it all looks like another great year for the 39^th American Birkebeiner on the 25^th of February, 2012.

You may have heard of the unfortunate accidental death of one of the Founders, David Landgraf. He was the first Founder to get to the Gravel Pit every year. Top 200 skier. I sent condolences to the family from the crew at the Pit and said we will miss seeing ski through, still at an elite pace. That leaves only two who have done every Birkie.

Telemark is back in operation, so that negative aspect of the race is off the table for this year.

There will be no parking permits needed this year, and food stop operation should be the same as previous years.

The previously promised building for the Gravel Pit was axed for this year by the Board. Since the GP parking lot is used for a CAMBA bike trail access point, and is so remote, it was feared that vandalism would be a problem. Something permanent is still being discussed, but we’ll have to wait and see.

If you got this via USPS mail, please return the postcards by the end of January, and I’ll get final information, maps and frequently asked question crib sheets sent out.

If you got this electronically, email me back by the end of January that you are planning to be at the Gravel Pit in 2012, how many are coming, and I’ll email the final details.

Don’t be afraid to recruit a few extra people to help. Last year it was capped at 9200 also, and some extra help would be good for that manic middle couple of hours.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Gravel Pit on Feb. 25, 2012.

The 2011 version of Dar's (Darwin Vollrath's) Midwest TT Championships is coming up fast on May 7. As in years past, we'll be putting riders out at the quick interval of every 15 seconds. Deb (Vollrath) Karlen and husband Mike will be putting on the feed again, along with lots of other goodies, all at no extra charge. In addition, commemorative t-shirts to the first 75 registered racers. Be sure to put your shirt size on your entry form when you pre-reg REAL SOON. Other perks! Long sleeve fastest male and female shirts....who will unseat last year's winners, Brett Whyte and Joan Carlson? There will also be a middle-of-the-pack shirt (RJ Ochman, last year's recipient). All riders who participate in Dar's TT, the July Greenwood RR AND the LBR GTLO TT qualify for the $150 raffle (you must be present to win). There will also be a $50 award to the most improved average speed from Dar's TT compared to the GTLO TT on July 10. DON"T FORGET! One dollar of every entry form goes to BOTH the Children's Miracle Network AND Darwin's local scholarship fund. Who can pass that up!!?!? Getting Friendly at the 2011 Friendly

Well....what can I say about the 2011 version of the Friendly Century? As a matter of fact, lots of things - and they're all great! "FRIENDLY", I think is a key word. "DEDICATED", too, comes to mind as I two-finger this out to the forum. The couple of days leading up to Saturday did not bode well for the conditions to be encountered, and hence, the anticipated turn-out of participants. And on both accounts, it turned out to be pretty accurate. At 6:30 AM it didn't look too bad. Cold, yes. Windy, yes. But pretty dry. That changed by 9 AM, as registration "officially" opened and we had one person show-up (other than the volunteers...). It was starting to drizzle....then sleet....then snow. Doc Janssen drove out from Greenwood reporting of slush building up on the sides of the roads with 25 mph winds out of the NW. Our earliest arrival was Wisport newbie, Brian Shimon of Stoughton, participating in his first event. Come to find, he's a vice-principal in Stoughton, and looking forward to a long drive back home by the end of the day...and then pulling the midnight-to-3 AM shift at post-prom that evening (dedicated). 9:45 rolled around, and we had a couple more showing up. 2010 rookies, Kevin Roy of Park Falls and Beau Perry of Wausau, and another 2011 rookie, Randy Fleming, also of Park Falls. "Dedicated", fits perfectly for Varrick Olson and Steve Fouts, as they made the drive up to Willard to put on the clinic at 10:30. Steve was up half the night with sick kids and he not feeling well himself, but he still wanted to be there for the clinic. He considered just riding the TT route (16 miles), but thought better of it by the time it came to suit up and he surveyed the outside conditions and the number of riders that had shown up - 7, total. Varrick, too, brought all the gear along to ride, but in the end, he too, thought twice about risking the outcome of a cold, wet ride. So 7 riders, 2 non-riders, 2 sag drivers, and, oh yeah, one registration person, Kevin Syth. Kevin had an unfortunate accident about 2 weeks ago as he fell off an unstable work scaffold and fractured his calcaneus (heel). He's in a cast until mid-May, and probably a splint after that for another 3-4 weeks. Not sure what his biking season will be like this year, but he was with me all day Friday, shopping for food supplies at the store, loading his trucks up, as best he could on crutches, or hopping around on one leg, prepping the food at the hall Saturday morning. Not a word of complaint, or griping - it ain't his style....dedicated. So 7 riders headed out about 11:45. We decided just to do the short, 60K/39.5 mi route to Thorp and back. Johnny Thompson was the only one who came in looking to do 100K, but was willing to back off to the shorter route to keep a sag vehicle from following him around solo. The first half of the ride, north and west, into the wind, wet roads and wheel spray, that, believe-it-or-not, dried up after about 5 miles! Riders separated after a while into a 2-man leading pair and then 5 trailing riders. We had some good banter, and we held up for riders dropping back and tried to impart some wisdom on drafting in crosswinds and didn't let anyone get dropped....friendly. We made it to Thorp dry, warm and as a group. The break at Thorp was short as we re-fueled quickly and wanted to get back to the road. The race back wasn't quite the mad-dash as in years past....only 7 riders, after all. 3 riders separated out after about 2 miles: Jamie Haag, Brian Shimon (newbie), and Scott Brown. It became clear right away that Brian will be a force in the 45-49 group this year - he's strong! And this early into the season, too. We stuck together pretty much all the way back, Brian dialing it back a bit for us old guys to hang on. No big sprint at the end as we ended up together, with Brian taking the honors and the first-place chocolate bunny, and Jamie holding back to let me take the 2nd chocolate bunny (no female riders this year...sorry ladies!). Tremendous food at the end, BBQ from Georgia Janssen, pasta salad, home-made cookies from Jerry/Carrol Block, Darlene Brown's banana bread and choc.chip cookies. "Friendly" conversation around the dinner table and EVERYONE, pitching in to help clean-up (dedicated/friendly).

Sorry to make this post so long, but I think it epitomizes the whole concept of what Wisport is and should be. I want to say thanks to Jerry Block and Doc Gary Janssen for a long slow drive in lead/sag vehicles and also to Diane Opelt and Darlene Brown (wifey) for all the food prep, kitchen help and clean-up.

Only 7 riders this year, but I'm looking forward to next year's event already, even if it's just 5 riders.

Friendly Century Gets Points Once Again

Due to the over whelming interest in getting points from the WiSport Friendly Century, WiSport is announcing that the WiSport Friendly Century in Willard WI on April 16 will once again be giving out Best of Seven and Team points for the event. Every individual who enters and completes any of the Friendly Century rides will receive 47 points towards there best of seven points and will receive team points for their teams. Team point will have a Maximum of 235 points.
